The Iranian Threat

The dire threat of Iran is widely recognized to be the most serious foreign policy crisis facing the Obama administration. Congress has just strengthened the sanctions against Iran, with even more severe penalties against foreign companies. The Obama administration has been rapidly expanding its offensive capacity in the African island of Diego Garcia, claimed by Britain, which had expelled the population so that the US could build the massive base it uses for attacking the Middle East and Central Asia. The Navy reports sending a submarine tender to the island to service nuclear-powered guided-missile submarines with Tomahawk missiles, which can carry nuclear warheads. Each submarine is reported to have the striking power of a typical carrier battle group. According to a US Navy cargo manifest obtained by the Sunday Herald (Glasgow), the substantial military equipment Obama has dispatched includes 387 “bunker busters” used for blasting hardened underground structures. Planning for these “massive ordnance penetrators,” the most powerful bombs in the arsenal short of nuclear weapons, was initiated in the Bush administration, but languished. On taking office, Obama immediately accelerated the plans, and they are to be deployed several years ahead of schedule, aiming specifically at Iran.

Why the Ruling Class Frequently Fills Me with Blinding Rage

Today’s example:

In an EXCLUSIVE interview on “This Week,” CIA Director Leon Panetta said that making progress in Afghanistan is both “harder” and going more slowly than anticipated.

“Is the strategy the right strategy? We think so,” he said. “I think…the key to success or failure is whether the Afghans accept responsibility, are able to deploy an effective army and police force to maintain stability. If they can do that, then I think we’re going to be able achieve the kind of progress and the kind of stability that the President is after,” Panetta said.

Obama DOCTRINE: Congress Just Declared Preemptive WAR on Iran

Posted: June 29th, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: War | Tags: , , , , , , , | 2 Comments »

War with Iran has already been decided by the powers that be and the modern-day quasi-declaration happened last Thursday.  Using the same legislative and propaganda playbook that led to the Iraq War, the U.S. Government has just officially declared War on Iran.  Reuters reported “Congress on Thursday approved tough new unilateral sanctions aimed at squeezing Iran’s energy and banking sectors, which could also hurt companies from other countries doing business with Tehran. The House of Representatives passed the bill 408-8 and sent it to President Barack Obama for signing into law. The Senate had approved it 99-0 earlier in the day.”

Court’s Dual Standards on Free Speech

Posted: June 29th, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: Big Brother, Bill of Rights, Politics | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

A majority of justices on the U.S. Supreme Court seems to believe in free speech for corporations when it comes to influencing elections, but not so much for actual people trying to end wars.

Five months after the Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission that the First Amendment guarantees corporations the right to spend unlimited amounts of money in political campaigns, the Court issued a ruling making the First Amendment less sacrosanct when it comes to private citizens advocating for peaceful conflict resolution.

In a 6-3 ruling on June 21, the Court upheld a federal law that criminalizes giving “material support,” including providing “expert advice,” to groups that have been designated by the State Department as terrorist organizations.

BP has been given unlimited access to all BP operations and meetings to a Louisiana shrimper’s wife named Kindra Arnesen.

As Yves Smith notes:

Arensen appears to have been invited in because she got media coverage earlier in June when CNN covered her efforts to organize wives of Gulf fisherman over concerns about the safety of working on oil cleanup.

Budget Cuts?

Posted: June 28th, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: Economics | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

As violent protests erupted outside, the leaders of the world’s largest economies plotted the future course of the global economy at this weekend’s G20 summit. So what was decided? Well, according to various reports in the mainstream media, it was the “deficit hawks” who got their way. Apparently the consensus of the G20 meetings was that a round of tough budget cuts is the medicine that the world economy needs. In fact, the G20 leaders all pledged to cut their respective budget deficits in half by 2013. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, one of the key advocates of budget cuts, said that the G20 nations need to walk a “tightrope” between stimulating their economies and debt reduction. But as the largest economies around the globe transition from reckless government spending to budget reductions and austerity measures, what is that really going to mean for the world economy?

100,000 ultra-Orthodox Jews rally in Jerusalem in support of segregation

Posted: June 28th, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: Politics | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

“It’s like putting Americans and Africans together. They can’t study together with such huge mental differences,” an ultra-Orthodox Jewish parent said when explaining why he cannot allow his daughters to share a classroom with Sephardi Jewish girls.

It’s hard to countenance the concept of a “demographic threat” and treat it as socially acceptable without also opening the door to other forms of bigotry that a liberal Zionist cannot possibly tolerate.

This is the dilemma many Israelis now face: How do you justify the idea that the rights of a non-Jewish minority can be restricted (this being a practical necessity if Israel is to remain a Jewish state), and then stand up in defense of religious and racial pluralism when ultra-Orthodox Jews insist that the “purity” of their children will be tainted if they are forced to share classrooms with Sephardi Jews?

More on Tazering Granny, and Similar Atrocities

Lona Varner, the 86-year-old grandmother who was shot twice with a Taser after 10 police officers swarmed her apartment last December 22, has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and reportedly told the police that she wanted to die, reported the El Reno Tribune.

According to El Reno Police Chief Ed Brown, Varner– who was confined to a bed and tethered to an oxygen tank — ordered the police to leave. She then reportedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stated that “She was in control of her life.”

It was this “aggressive” gesture that supposedly made it necessary for the police to cut off the elderly woman’s oxygen supply and shoot her twice with a Taser.
