Modern societies have justified their adoption of criminal activities by claiming that such techniques are necessary to combat evil. But the war against evil by the good cannot be won using evil tactics. Evil never yields goodness, and by using these evil practices, the amount of evil in the world increases both in amount and extent. Attempting to save the nation by becoming what you are trying to save the nation from is suicidal. Unless benign techniques such as those developed by primitive societies are put to use, evil will prevail. Then, paraphrasing J. Robert Oppenheimer’s comment after the first atomic bomb was successfully tested, We will have become evil, the destroyer of goodness.
Some decades ago, while having dinner with a newly elected Attorney General of the State of North Carolina and the Chief Justice of that state’s Supreme Court, the jurist told me that everyone involved in the legal system and enforcement had to think like criminals to catch them. He believed the statement to be straight forward and evident until I pointed out that the line between thinking like a criminal and acting like one is very fine and is easily and frequently crossed, which results in increasing the amount of evil in society rather than reducing it. Few apparently notice this consequence and the criminal-like behavior of those charged with enforcing and adjudicating the law has increased so substantially that it has become common practice.

The video above was taken by a surveillance camera maintained by police in Denver, Colorado last year.
Michael DeHerrera (Source: DenverPost.com)
The video shows Officer Devin Sparks brutally slamming a young man named Michael DeHerrera to the ground. After the take-down, the camera pans away, but the officer can still be seen repeatedly striking DeHerrera with an object that the Denver Postlater identified as “a department-issued piece of metal wrapped in leather.” After the beating, the officer violently lifts a barely-conscious DeHerrera up then lets him fall back to the ground. He then picks him up again and drags him to his police cruiser. After forcing Dehererra into the back seat, the officer appears to slam the car door on him several times.
In his police report, Officer Sparks justified his brutal attack on DeHerrera by claiming that he “spun to his left attempting to strike me with a closed right fist,” however, the video proves that this was an outright fabrication.
You have two assholes. One is a citizen, he’s got the right to be an asshole. They other is a public servant. He doesn’t (or shouldn’t) have the right to be an asshole.

Phil Price, a friend and nationally known DUI attorney in Montgomery, Alabama, conducted an interesting series of tests a few years ago on one of the most commonly used breath testing machines. Without consuming any alcoholic beverages, he submitted himself to repeated breath testing — after eating various types of food.
His findings were startling.
After consuming almost any type of bread product — white loaf bread, donuts, pretzels, pastries, etc. — Price consistently registered blood-alcohol readings on the machine. These levels were commonly around .03%, but rose as high as .05% (enough, along with a drink or two, to reach illegal levels). Further, the Intoxilyzer’s slope detector (an electrical circuit designed to detect alcohol from the mouth rather than from the lungs) failed to indicate the presence of any "mouth alcohol". He reported this in an article entitled "Intoxilyzer: A Bread Testing Device?", 15(4)Drinking/Driving Law Letter 52.
The brutality exhibited by the police in this video is so unwarranted, so vicious, and so totally despicable, that not even the usual “defend-the-police-no-matter-what” automatons are putting up a fight in the comments section. Of course, the “Safety Manager” maintains that the fine officer who obviously assaults a man for absolutely nothing, deserves to keep his job.
Before the video was discovered, the police officer simply made up a story that the assaulted bystander was trying to strike the police officer. The DPD, however, believes that police who lie and attack the public unprovoked should be kept on the force. Your tax dollars at work.
Note also how the video camera, being operated by a police force employee, immediately pans away from the action after it becomes apparent that excessive force is being used.
